Penzance Reserves 1-6 Illogan RBL

Penzance dropped into the bottom half of the table after suffering their heaviest home lose of the season to potential league champions Illogan.

Illogan worked as a unit and closed down every Penzance break. Perhaps the Magpies should have kept the ball on the ground a bit more as the Illogan lads were all 6ins taller and could cut out the high balls.

The early exchanges are fairly even but the warnings were there. It was 12mins before the Oxland Park outfit had their first chance. Illogan break left, a high cross into the box sees a shot come in but it goes high.

A few minutes later the first goal goes in. An Illogan corner on the right, ball over and a simple header from an unmarked Matt Calloway puts them 1-0 up after 20mins.

Penzance are still reeling when a minute later they concede another. A long Illogan ball from the back sees Gary Sturmey run onto it firing a low shot past the onrushing keeper. 31mins gone 0-2.

Illogan break again into the box, an overhead kick goes into the keepers arms.

By now the whole game is broken up by the ref continuously blowing his whistle for every minor infringement and then insisting the walls go back what to everyone seems more like 15 than 10yds. Penzance get a free kick near the half-way line. The ball is knocked in, cleared to Ross Badcock who volleys in but just wide.

Illogan then get a long range free kick that is flicked on but once again Tim Coates grabs it.

Another free kick for Penzance on the left is knocked in high for James Street to head over from 10yds out.

H-T

Within three minutes of the second half starting Penzance concede another. An obvious Illogan handball midfield is not spotted by the officials but by everyone else. The player then turns, knocks a high ball into the box for Phil Willey to head past a stranded keeper. 48mins 0-3.

Illogan once again break right, the ball is knocked square, in goes the shot, Coates gets down to push the ball away.

58mins Penzance get a penalty. Penzance beak left with Steve Hancock who runs into the box but is clattered from behind. Ashley Thomas takes responsibility for the spot kick sending the keeper the wrong way with a high ball. A goal! Mad celebrations.

Three minutes later Penzance are brought back down to earth. Illogan break from midfield with Gary Sturmey. The keeper has no choice but to come out to the edge of his box. Sturmey goes round the diving stopper and knocks the ball into the empty net. 1-4, 61mins.

The game has turned and it becomes all one way. A couple of Illogan breaks see shots come in but both are wide.

Penzance are now trying damage limitation but in the 72min Illogan are awarded their own penalty when a striker is knocked over in the box. Up runs keeper Barry Wyatt to take it. Penzance keeper dives, the ball down the middle, 1-5.

Can Penzance hold out? No, on 87mins Illogan get a throw on the right. Back to the thrower, cross pitch ball to Craig Williams who scores the best goal of the match from fully 35yds. A screamer. 1-6.

Last action belongs to Penzance as Wyatt saves a shot after Penzance push forward for a conciliation goal.
