Michael Rabone
Newquay 3 - 0 Holmans Newquay welcomed back veteran defender Martin Atkinson amongst a host of other former club favourites due to absences and illness that have cost the club a number of points during recent weeks. Unrecognisable from the team that last won at home against Penzance five games ago, Atkinson returned for his twelfth consecutive season at the club, offering an amazing win ratio when wearing the Newquay shirt. Thankfully Atkinson's presence was enough to bolster a Newquay side that saw their average age increase by over five years with the inclusion of Holland, Rabone, Darwent, Butterley and Hill. Despite Holmans having a presentable chance early on, Newquay had a host of chances in the first half and failed to convert until late on. With top goalscorers Rabone Jnr, Lett and Barker all absent, Newquay's patched together strike force of Rabone and Hill worked with the midfield to carve out options that did not materialise into a clear goal scoring opportunity. The game may have changed when Rabone broke free of the last defender, only to be pulled back on the edge of the box. The free kick was awarded and, continuing a long-standing debate on the Cornish Soccer Forum, no further action taken. Much to the delight of the Newquay players, late in the first half Jay Tipton rose above the Holmans goalkeeper to head home for the second game in a row, giving Newquay a deserved lead at half-time. In truth, the second half was the same as the first - poor. Whilst the pitch was hard and the bounce unforgiving, the quality was substandard and Newquay created a volume of chances that were not taken. Atkinson joined the affray and rolled back the years with an outstanding first touch to maintain possession and set up another counter attack. Yet again Billy Holland in the Newquay goal had a big say in the final outcome, despite being largely untested throughout, making a stunning reaction save from point blank range to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity with five minutes remaining. Newquay were forced into action and a great run by striker Hill, who had worked tirelessly all game, resulted in a free kick on the edge of the box that Jay Tipton rifled in at 5mph under the body of the goalkeeper. The Holmans team dropped their tempo and a through ball from Lewis Burgin, who had an excellent game in midfield, found Michael Rabone who pulled the ball back to Ren Hill to bundle home a third. Newquay have two home and two away games remaining to see out their season. Attendance -
