Foxhole 2 Vospers Oak Villa 6

Saturday 31st October 2009

There was no indication of this latest thrashing during the opening 180 seconds when Foxhole may easily have scored three times. First, Nicholls cleverly released Rowe whose run was unceremoniously halted inches outside the box by Wills, who amazingly escaped without even a yellow card when he could have expected to be dismissed for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Rowe's thunderous goalbound free-kick was then deflected wide before a similar fate befell Nicholls' snapshot, with Lewis beaten. Alas, virtually all of the remaining eighty-seven minutes saw the worryingly ordinary visitors on top, three late goals by their substitutes dashing hopes of a barely deserved point.

On the quarter hour, Beeney slammed home a loose ball before the giant Simmonds twice went close, having a drive saved by Ryan Holland's legs and firing over following a good turn. Nicholls did lob wide after Rowe had flicked on Kenny's free-kick, before the same player failed to gather Meens' long ball when well placed, but it was no surprise when Mitchell doubled the lead on 32, his left-footed screamer finding the top corner. Moments after Simmonds had been cautioned for fouling Kenny, the Foxes made it 2-1 when Revell held Rowe, who emphatically despatched the penalty eight minutes before the break.

Foxhole started the second-half relatively brightly, the only blemish being Adam Holland's booking for a challenge on Simmonds, but, on the hour and just when they appeared to be capable of mounting some sustained pressure, Carpenter's poor header put Meens in trouble, and the otherwise anonymous Beeney ruthlessly took advantage. Five minutes later, however, Ansell's wayward pass was entertainingly headed beyond his own keeper by Scott, before Rowe was inches away from equalising when Lewis fumbled Bouch's backpass only for the angle to prove too acute.

Regrettably, it was not until the death that the Foxes were to threaten again, when Rowe's weak shot from eight yards was comfortably gathered. By then, Beynon had emerged from the bench on 79 to score twice from close-range within three minutes with his first two touches, as the home defending degenerated into chaos. As darkness descended to match the general air of gloom, there was still time for another replacement, Honeywill, to get in on the act, tapping home Scholes' cross-shot at the far-post, the twentieth goal conceded in four successive defeats.
