Liverton 4 Foxhole 2

Saturday 24th October 2009

After some recent disappointing performances, Foxhole at least restored some pride with a battling performance in South Devon, fighting back from 2-0 down before succumbing to tiredness and two goals in extra-time. Liverton had first use of the strong breeze and it soon became evident their pacy strikers and inventive midfield quintet would provide a serious test to the Foxes' experimental 4-2-3-1 formation. Seconds after Bowker's brilliant effort had been tipped onto the bar, Ford opened the scoring on seventeen minutes direct from a free-kick and, nine minutes later, Broadway deservedly doubled the lead from close range. Mackellar was finding Bowker particularly dangerous and was eventually booked for one foul too many; by contrast, imposing home centre-half Dan Harrity was dealing comfortably with an increasingly isolated Rowe, whose clever lob to beat Lewis three minutes before the interval came completely out of the blue.

Broadway, possibly still smarting from wasting a great opportunity when his low drive cannoned off the legs of Ryan Holland, was cautioned just after the restart for simulation. Ansell soon joined him in the book for an innocuous challenge on Ford, who otherwise spent the afternoon largely unmarked. However, it gradually dawned on the visitors that Liverton really weren't that great, with both Nicholls and Pinhammer trying their luck from distance and Rowe's spectacular volley grazing the bar. Even Harrity was now looking shaky, being fortunate not to concede an own-goal with a poor header, he and his fellow defenders not helped by Lewis' unconvincing goalkeeping. On 77, Rowe capitalised on confusion triggered by a double substitution to find Pinhammer lurking at the far-post for a fine equaliser; by then a Foxhole win seemed the most likely outcome, with both Ansell and the excellent Adam Holland going close, although Rudge fired a very presentable chance wide at the death.

Regrettably, Foxhole could not continue their momentum. Fisher, Broadway and Chubb may each have netted before the revitalised Broadway's fantastic first touch allowed him to easily beat Holland halfway through the first period of extra-time. Had Pinhammer immediately shown similar composure from Greenaway's inviting centre an equaliser would have been a formality, but his indecision proved costly as, moments later, Chubb's volley made it 4-2 after Mason had headed Chris Harrity's corner back across goal. Broadway then drove wide after skipping past Kenny, and was again denied by Holland's legs, while Chris Harrity blazed over when well-placed, but a heavier defeat would have been tough on the Foxes, who competed to the end and may on another day have forced penalties with Ansell's late volley and Adam Holland's effort from a tight angle that extended Lewis.
