somersetspur
It has been said in some newspapers today that Theo Walcott has said he would gladly have a TROPHYLESS season with Arsenal, just to be involved in a successful England World Cup campaign. So my question to all soccer fans is,do you think any other England players would give up CLUB Trophies for England World Cup success.? Gerrard to give up a Premiership Winners medal for a World Cup winners medal.? Terry + Lampard a Champions League Final win for World Cup glory.? Ferdinand + Rooney, what would they prefer.? Glen Johnson,Ashley Cole, Gareth Barry, and all the rest, what would they really want.?

Guest The Judge aka RED OR DEAD
Good topic... I think we will find out towards the end of the season which players will take it easy for fear of injury and not be on the Plane to Sth Africa. I honestly beleive all players want to win every match they play in, so doubt the win one rather than another scenario is a factor. The major England players will be challenging for cups/title and will want to win every honour regardless, no fear of injury for those players, they would fight for club and country on one leg. Those at lesser clubs may towards the end of April pull out of challenges and those matches will be worth looking at for betting opportunities. Certain managers do have the win one rather than another mentality though and play kids in so called lesser cups or matches.
midfield
Searched the web and STILL can't find ANY reference to comments attributed to Walcott! Ah! Found it! Sunday Express... “The World Cup is the biggest trophy you can win in football,” he said. “You ask anyone that question– they would love to win it. “I’ll probably get killed by all these Arsenal fans now, but deep down the World Cup is the big one. “If you win that in your career, it’s some achievement. We have got a great chance.” What he seems to be saying is that the World Cup takes priority for him. He isn't saying that he would have a trophyless season with us though! Not very clever timing but draw your own conclusions.

A One And A Six
Id rather win a World Cup then any club competition, domestic or continental. Its the pinnacle of any players career! I completely understand what Theo is saying. Im an Arsenal fan but id rather see England win the World Cup next summer, then Arsenal win anything. Country always takes priority over club preference for me! :)

You took a comment he made and made up the rest. He just craves winning the World Cup. What top professional player wouldn't?
GuvDRed
Interesting one,Firstly i think everyone feel's the world cup is the pinnacle,However there's nothing to state he's not going to be making the effort for Arsenal,Plus Wenger would see through it if he was'nt. Not only that if your not playing well your not in the squad. Another case of blown well out of proportion i think!!!!!
somersetspur
Surprise,Surprise, Steven Gerrard pulls out of the England squad with an injury. I've got tickets for Sundays game, and have had a bet, promising I will walk all the way home,if Gerrard dont play for Liverpool. I suppose, losing Alonso, and there new signing unfit, there is no way the scoucers want Gerrard to get injured playing for his Country. CLUB v COUNTRY,Hmmmmmmmm. <_<
GuvDRed
It pains me to defend the Scousers,But on this one i've got to. If it were me and i had a niggle or whatever 3 days before the start of the season,I'd pull out too. Its a nothing game, stupidly put this close to the 'Big K.O',And whats Capello gonna learn about Gerrard in this game that he don't already know?????? I know some may bring the representing your country argument to the table,But stupid timing If it was a United player i'd be chuffed he'd pulled out if he were'nt right. I'm not saying it's right,I'm just being honest
somersetspur
I agree in a way with it being a meaningless friendly. If it does'nt matter, why are we playing the game. So are you saying,no friendlies, just qualifiers. What if this game was against Croatia,in the qualifying group. Would Gerrard play.YES. Why can some superstars pick and choose their internationals.? Thats wrong.
GuvDRed
I know what your saying,Yes he would have played,But its not Croatia,And i'm not saying there should'nt be any friendlies i just feel this one is ridiculous so close to the season opener.I can't answer why its being played (thats down to the powers that be)but i do feel its meaningless. I did say 'I'm not saying its right,I'm just being honest'
St Darren
It was always likely that players would pull out of England Friendlies, Fergie has been pulling players out for years, and now other managers do it as well. I'd rather a fit Steven Gerrard for Liverpool and if I was asked what I'd prefer, England World Cup win or Liverpool League Win, there would only be one answer, every single year, infact I'd probably take a Liverpool Carling Cup Final win!!! Club would win all the time for me
GuvDRed
I totally agree (even with the Fergie bit),Other managers are just catching onto it now,But if its a friendly why risk your club players,The club pays the wages. And Sven handing out caps all over the place,Took the pride out of it.

somersetspur
Cheers Buddy. I have always said, when he was at Spurs first time, play him every week and he will score 20-25 goals a season. Im afraid at Spurs,Arry will persist with making the arm waving Irish Pikey captain and play Robbie Keane every time . I hope he dont pick Defoe with Keane didnt work first time, and it wont work now. Defoe will be much better with Crouch or Pavlyuchenko, just like he was last night with Carlton Cole. Got to have a big man up alongside him.
