Penryn v Penzance Match Report

Recommended Posts

Penryn Athletic Reserves 1-1 Penzance Reserves

Even though this was a game of few clear cut chances both teams played attractive football that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Penzance played a neat passing game but their final through ball was found wanting plus at times they had a shoot on sight attitude, whilst Penryn were sharp on the break but like the Magpies their final ball let them down.

This is the first point gained by Penzance at Kernick Road since the 2002-03 season and only the second draw between the teams.

Penzance started the brighter and for long periods had Penryn chasing the ball. Steve Hancock has the first chance of the game when a corner from the left is fired over and he gets a flick header on it but the ball goes just over the bar.

Dexter King in the Penzance goal has to be on his toes when Penryn work the ball to the right, lob it into the box and he has to punch away a goal bound header for a corner. He then stops a low 40yd shot from Paul Hart that skims along the ground.

Penryn start to push Penzance back for the last 15mins of the half. They work the ball from the back, breaking right. A long shot into the box has to be scrambled away by King for another corner. The corner on the left is knocked into the box, the shot comes in and is blocked by King, the rebound comes out, is fired in and King makes a great block on the line to clear.

Penzance’s Hancock is injured just before half time and is replaced by Charlie Penny.

H-T

The half starts quietly with Penzance again playing their passing game. Then they break the deadlock. They break left with Ashley Thomas who puts in a long cross pitch lob to Gary Matthews who runs with the ball onto the edge of the box where he fires the ball in. The shot is blocked by the keeper but the rebound falls to Matthews who makes no mistake from 10yds. 0-1 after 53mins.

Four minutes later Penryn are back on level terms. They get a free kick on the left about 25yds from goal. Up steps Paul Hart who fires it low past the keeper. Some reports say the ball got a slight deflection but we didn’t notice one. 1-1 after 57mins.

Penryn are then unlucky not to take the lead through a freak lob. They work the ball to the right touchline about 45yds from goal. The player then lobs the ball into the area for his forwards but miss shoots and the ball goes high and bounces on top of the cross bar with King leaving it thinking it is going behind.

Thomas tries to break forward for Penzance, getting the ball on the half way line and running into the box, but his shot goes just wide of the post. Penzance’s Steve Burt has the last real chance of the match when he runs onto a through ball only to see his 20yd shot just go over the bar.

Penzance Man of The Match goes to Ashley Thomas this week. He was the link between the backs and forwards and set up most of the team’s chances. Also a mention for keeper Dexter King, kept the Magpies in the game.
