Torpoint Athletic 2-1 Saltash United

A game that started strongly for the hosts when they put pressure on the away defence but lacked clear chances.

A fine first time shot by Torpoint striker Robbins saw the ball go out off the post from 25 yards out before the deadlock was broken by Brayson with a good finish from a well made position.

This seemed to rally Saltash and after a few good spells of play and wide attacking the ball came over the defence from wide and was met with a well taken overhead kick from 7 yards that was well saved with quick feet by Bond in the Torpoint goal. Saltash had 2 other chances which were well blocked by Rogers and Bond respectively.

Saltash were awarded a dubious penalty on 40 minutes after an alleged foul by Rogers on the Saltash striker. Torpoint Keepe went the right way and was close but a the penalty was well placed and high right into the cornner.

Saltash almost grabbed a late 1st half goal on 43 mins when a scrappy mess in the middle fell to a Saltash midfielder. His shot was shanked into the ground and looped up over the Torpoint Keeper, hit the bar before coming back and into his thankful hands.

HT 1-1

The 2nd half saw an improvement from the home side and very quickly drew a good save from the Saltash Keeper.

Torpoint continued to press and got the goal to put them 2-1 up after 60mins with an angled finish by Westall.

Torpoint had 3 or 4 chances to wrap up the victory but hit the bar, had one finely saved from the away keeper and had a big bobble causing a mis kick from close range.

Saltash rarely threatened in the 2nd half and although the scoreline only had a goal between the sides, the points based on the 2nd half were deffinitely justified in going to Torpoint.

Saltash played a lot better than their league position and I am sure if they have that team every game and play like that more often then they will pick up more points.

Torpoint now eye up the Junior Cup final at St Agnes on Sunday against Duchy Prem rivals St Stephen
