This weekend sees Mousehole AFC’s biggest event for 30 years, as the club host Leeds United this Sunday, 1st October, to celebrate the launch of its new Academy and Youth Development Programme and the opening of the refurbished ground for the first football to be played on home soil since May.

The event starts at 12 noon with some of The Seagulls’ newly-created youth teams showcasing their talents.

At 2.30pm, a young Leeds United side will play a full-scale game against Mousehole’s First team comprising many players from its own new Academy.

At 4.30pm, an over-40s 7-a-side tournament will feature a ‘Leeds Legends’ team including Neil Sullivan, Andy Gray, Bobby Davison, Chris Whyte and Jason Blunt, together with teams from Mousehole ‘Old Boys’, RNLI Penlee Lifeboat, Cornish Pirates and Cornwall Football Veterans.

There will be live music in the clubhouse from 7pm.  A full souvenir programme will be available, together with competitions, prizes and refreshments throughout the day.  Stewards will be on hand to direct visitors to the available car parking.  Visitors are asked to arrive in good time to avoid traffic congestion in the area.

Tickets for the day are for sale online via the club’s website www.mouseholeafc.co.uk and at various local outlets including Kings Arms Paul; Ship Inn, Britsih Legion and Mousehole News in Mousehole; and in Penzance at The Alverne, Globe, Turks Head and Also Gifts.

Jason Blunt, Mousehole’s Director of Academy and Youth Development – until July the manager of Leeds United Under-23s – is excited about the whole day:  “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the club to show what it can do, and how far it’s come in a short space of time.  The planning and organisation of the day have been massive and involved dozens of volunteers - hopefully, this could be the start of a series of similar events in the future.  In the meantime I’m delighted to be meeting up with some of my old pals from Leeds United and of course a hugely talented group of youngsters who could well be playing for their club in the Premier League before too long.  Our own players will be put to the test but we’ve made a good start to our long-term journey as a youth-focussed club and I’m confident we won’t let ourselves down.”

In a busy summer of developments, Mousehole have set up an ‘Elite Player’ Academy for 16-23 year olds and six new Youth teams, while Trungle Parc has undergone a re-vamp with new stand, dugouts and improvements to the clubhouse and changing rooms.  Sunday’s games will be the first played on the pitch since the completion of major drainage and re-surfacing work funded by an £80k grant from Sport England.
