St Austell 3 v 1 Camelford

Decent crowd of about 150 to watch this one tonight. St Austell were missing Goldsworthy and a couple of others carrying knocks, but Camelford were missing their two CB's and the two players covering never having played together before - however made a very decent pairing.

St Austell got off to a flyer with a cracking change of play by Eddy to (I believe Calver) who rocketed the ball into the opposite corner on about 4 minutes. St Austell extended the lead on about 18 minutes, after Eddy 'bought' a free kick with a theatrical fall and from about 25yds up steps Mr Watts who slots home a cracking free kick.

Camelford pulled a goal back with a cracking finish by Boxall and started to take a foothold in the game, however shortly afterwards another freekick by Watts and 3-1, to finish the half's scoring. Second half saw a very even contest and both teams had a couple of chances that they could / should have scored, however the game finished 3-1, which was probably a fair result.

I have to be honest, the young referee had a very mixed game, some of his decision making was inconsistent - he tried at times to let the game flow, however clearly reacted to remonstrations on the pitch and often went with the loudest call, mainly from St Austell. Mr Eddy was lucky to stay on the pitch (again) after a lunging tackle and more 50/50 decisions went the way of the home team. That said the game was played in a very good spirit with both teams showing each other respect when players got injured.

St Austell got 3 valuable points tonight, but are a long way off the team of last season, so far. Their lack of ability to score goals in open play must be a concern for them, however any team giving them free kicks around the box will suffer. Camelford can take several positives from the game, only conceding one goal in open play and matching St Austell for 82 minutes of the game on their home pitch - bring on the return fixture :-))

Well done St Austell, hopefully tonight's points will start their season - still need a couple of midfielders though and to get Goldie back fit again.
