Trelawny 4 Madron v Penzance

Recommended Posts

In the future when someone looks at the record books and sees that Penzance Reserves beat Madron 14-1 on 5th September 2017 in a Trelawny Division 4 game they will think that Penzance must have played well.

But the truth is somewhat different.

Madron played the first twenty minutes of the game with only nine players (and two of those were unsuspecting “elder gentlemen” who never expected to play), the middle twenty with ten, and the final twenty again with nine, after a player walked off the pitch as he didn't like losing. The game was shortened as it kicked off slightly late and the nights are now drawing in.

Both sets of players played the game as it should be played, fairly with no excuses from Madron for their player shortage and no “foot off the pedal” from Penzance. Injured players got up and got on with it and there wasn't a bit of dissent from either side.

The busiest player on the pitch was the Madron keeper, a bit stiff to start but as the game went on he made some good saves. He had to pick the ball out of the back of his net in the 2nd, 4th, 12th, 16th, 33rd and 40+2th minutes during the first half. Penance wasted a hatful of chances to score but for wayward shots or weak finishing, and were quite rightly being chastised by those on the sidelines. In the 11th minute with the score at 2-0, Madron scored direct from a free kick, 10 yards inside their own half, when a lofted ball, with the help of the strong wind, fooled the keeper and dropped into the back of his net.

With a flea in their ears, Penzance scored within 22 seconds of the restart and added goals in the 50th, 53rd, 62nd, 63rd, 72nd and 76th minutes. Altogether, twelve from the boot, two via the head. For the history books, Reece Evans scored 6, Luke Carroll, Tristan Hunter, William Symons, Ryan Wilkinson, Kieran Nicholls and Matt Robinson got one each, with a brace from “Plare Z1”. During the game the Madron players never gave up and were a credit to their club.

It is sad to see a club like Madron with a long history (a team photo from the 1921-22 season is on-line) suffering on the pitch from lack of players and I am sure if you are a player of any ability and are willing to turn out for them, then the club would love to hear from you via their Secretary, who's details can be found on the Trelawny League Full-Time web site or on the Cornwall FA's website under Find-A-Club.

Cornish Football can not afford to lose another club like Madron with it's proud history, so please contact them.
