SWPL Division One West

Mousehole 5 (B Prowse 2, M George 26, E Ivanov 56, J May 84, G James 85)

Penzance 2 (N Pugliese 44, C Nicholls 70)

The Seagulls went level on points with the Magpies and inflicted only a second defeat of the season over their beleaguered neighbours at Trungle Parc.

Barrie Prowse got the home side off to a flying start when his searing 22 yard shot arrowed into the top left corner after only two minutes, before Mark George made it 2-0 on 26 minutes, when he was played through by Tom Patrick and looped his shot over the stranded Craig Nicholls.

Nick Pugliese pulled a goal back just before the break with a neat finish to make it 2-1 at half-time. But if Penzance's first half performance had been average, at best, the second half display was a complete shambles, as Mousehole taught them a lesson in work rate, commitment and desire.

And the Seagulls restored their two-goal advantage 11 minutes after the interval when a defensive mix-up gifted Ivanov a simple tap-in into an empty net, only for Penzance to be thrown an undeserved lifeline 20 minutes from time when Nicholl's long punt up field evaded the home defence and bounced over his opposite number Ian Chatfield.

The home side soon resumed normal service though as the visiting defence again hopelessly imploded, and two goals inside five mad minutes put the outcome beyond any doubt. Substitute Gerens James squared across the face of goal for fellow replacement Jowan May to slot into another empty net, before James went one better and scored himself with a fine finish within seconds of the restart for the fifth.

Penzance's comical defending showed few signs of improvement, and only a penalty save by Nicholls to deny Ivanov with the last kick of the game prevented further embarrassment for an outbattled and outplayed visiting team, who from one to 11, need to take a long hard look at themselves after this woeful performance.

Mousehole: I Chatfield; J Tonkin, T Patrick, K Snell, M Trevail, T Cape, J Wing, E Ivanov, M George, B Prowse, R Hall. Subs: J May (for George), J Day (for Hall), G James (for Tonkin).

Penzance: C Nicholls; J Liddicoat, M Witts, J Street, L Devine, S Burt, D Magee, N Pugliese, W Quinn, D Stidwell, S Hancock. Subs: S Reynolds (for Magee), D Holsey (for Liddicoat), J Greet (not used).

Referee: Stig.

Milbrook 2 v Wendron 0

A match played in blustery wind on a very wet pitch had a lot of talking points. Millbrook took the lead after Wendron's keeper brought down Jon Harris and Harris himself got up to convert the penalty. With the ball running wide of the goal I think the referee was spot on with his decision to show the keeper yellow not red.

In the second half James Boon converted a corner to put Millbrook 2-0 up and then two moments of madness saw Wendron reduced to nine men, allowing Millbrook to ease off and take the points.

First, the Wendron keeper was challenged to a 50-50 ball, got angry and, I think, was shown a straight red card although it might have been a second yellow. Not long after a second Wendron player reacted badly to a tangle of legs and threw a punch. He received a straight red and there followed a disgraceful scene where the player had to be manhandled from the pitch by the Wendron manager and other teammates. It took fully two minutes to get him to leave the pitch. He certainly wasn't a fair reflection on the rest of the Wendron team who were hard-working and should be congratulated for the way they stuck to their task with nine men over the final 25 minutes or so.

:clapper: I would just like to say what a fabulous, well fought game of footie I witnessed at Trungle Parc yesterday afternoon. The Seagulls played a mighty game and never gave up til the end.. well done to the whole team and management. :clapper:
