Cornwall vs Caribbean XI 1959

On Tuesday 1st September 1959, Cornwall played a Caribbean XI (West Indies International Team) at St Austell.

The Cornwall team playing in white as listed in the programme were:

O. Warrick (Bugle)

J.D. Robertson (RAF St Mawgan), N. Morrison (Falmouth Town

T. Stephens (Nanpean), H.C. Jefferies (captain, Truro City), D. Wadd (Cornwall Constabulary and Penzance)

D. Pollard (Newquay), J. Brown (Wadebridge), W. Hogbin (RAF St Mawgan), T.S. O'Leary (RNAS Culdrose), A.H. Pollard (Newquay)

The Caribbean XI who played in blue and gold were listed as:

P.E. Gomez (captain)

H. Braithwaite, De La Bastide

D. Griffith, W.V. Rodriguez, C.A.L. Largie

L. Leggard, R.J. Gray, K.O. East, C. Julian, A.O. Parker

Their pen pictures were:

Patrick Elton Gomez: Age 29. Born in Trinidad. Height 5'9". Goalkeeper and captain. Played at Penzance in the 1953 Trinidad tour. His hands are safe and his anticipation almost faultless

Hubert Braithwaite: A well built six footer with a powerful kick in either foot. He has been capped twelve times for British Guinea since 1950. Combines good anticipation with firm tackling.

Tyrone Carl De La Bastide: Full back born in Trinidad. Age 21. Played for his village in Jamaica, on the small side for a defender, he is nevertheless fast. Tackles hard and is quick in recovery.

Doyle Griffith: Half back. Born in Trinidad age 27. Has played for Trinidad on numerous occasions including in this country. A tireless wing half. His strength likes in astute anticipation.

William Vincente Rodriguez: Born in Trinidad age 25. Balanced, cultured and an artist in the use of the ball, also a cricketer has played for the West Indies against India and Pakistan. He also enjoys swimming and horse racing.

Carl Ashton Lascelles Largie: A Jamaican, 31 years old, who is an experiences player in the half back line, and is expected to be very useful on this tour.

Leonard Leggard: Outside right. Born in Trinidad. Age 29. Is full of confidence and makes good use of the open spaces. His hobbies are reading, movies and swimming.

Ronald James Gray: Born in England, now resident in Trinidad, he is 20 years of age. A clever player who oftimes splits a defence. Very dangerous in the area with both head and feet.

Kenneth Olton East: 30 years old. Has represented Jamaica three times in 1958/59. No. 1 centre forward of the team. A very nippy player and many goals are expected of him.

Compton Julian: Short, nippy inside left with good ball control. Plays for Georgetown's YMCA and won his colony colours in 1958 and 1959.

Alan Owen Parker: Outside left, a 27 year old Jamaican who has represented his country on many occasions. An outside left who can use both feet with equal skill.

The match was refereed by R. Turner and the Cornwall assistant was J. Morris.

They also played at Penlee Park, Penzance on the Thursday (3rd September) 1959. They were the West Indies International Team.

Official Programme 3d (I have an original + a picture of the teams being presented before kick-off).

In the programme notes it stated that Cornwall had organised four games before competition in the Southern Counties' Amateur Championship and in the
South Western Federation. The first of the four was the game at St Austell and the game at Penzance.

There followed two games at Bodmin and Newquay against a Combined Services XI and Mike Sterne's XI.

6 seasons earlier in 1953 part of a 14 match tour which ended at Plough Lane,Wimbledon when Trinidad & Tobago drew 2-2 with The F A Amateur X1
