24th July 2015
Penzance 1-6 Porthleven
Att – 121

Porthleven were flattered by this score-line. Granted on chances would have won this match but the difference between the sides, reflected in the scoreline was, Port played as a team and Penzance played some of the game as individuals. Port's passing was good whilst the Magpies need a couple more games to be “aware” of their team-mates.

A decent crowd was in attendance at the ground, being boosted by quite a few Junior Magpies and their parents who took part in a pre-game photo shoot. Big groans were heard when Penzance missed their chances.

The game is 9 minutes old when Porthleven go one up through Kyle Fraser. A break just left of centre sees him shoot low. The ball deflects off the back of a defender, leaving Penzance keeper Paul Williams wrong footed as it goes in at the far post.

The game is fairly even for the next few minutes. Penzance having a corner that is headed at the near post for a header at the back of the box, for a header that goes over the bar.

Porthleven are putting some passes together and Penzance seen to lose position and chase the ball like a puppy playing on a beach. The Magpies are playing four at the back but half the time one goes wandering leaving them exposed especially when Port break on their right leaving two against one on the Penzance right.

On 23, former Magpie Ryan Trathen scores when he breaks into the box, on the right, and volley's in low, cross goal.

All the chances are going one way and it no surprise when it is 3-0 after 37. Port work the ball round the middle of the Penzance half, a through ball on the left finds George Mulcher who makes no mistake with a rising 10yd strike.

The second half sees Penzance stepping up a gear and they could have pulled one back but for a great save by the Port keeper. Penzance quickly knock the ball from back to front in three passes, fire in, only to see the keeper leap and finger tip the ball over the bar. Great football from both sides.

Port weather the storm and get back into the game. 56 mins gone and it is 4-0. A cross pitch ball from the back finds Trathen 40yds out. He runs past his defender, into the box, beats another and plants a screamer into the far corner of the net for the best goal of the game.

Another Porthleven break six minutes later increases the lead. A break on the left, layed off to Luke Hunter who scores the fifth with a low shot.

The game becomes more even and there are cheers from the home supporters when they score on 82mins. A break on the right is laid off to Jeremy Blake who beats the keeper with a 15yd pile driver.

The revival lasts 2mins as five from time Port get their final goal through Matthew Best. A long ball is laid off for him to shoot past Williams.

I thought Falmouth were excellent in the 1st half & deservedly were 2 goals up, could have been 3 but for a brilliant penalty save by Jason Robertson. Helston were given a lifeline just before half time & Falmouth, with not the largest squad available, sat deep & tried to defend their lead, which they looked like doing comfortably until Ash Stidwell's stunning strike levelled the scores 10 minutes from the end. In my opinion, draw was a fair result, but I'm pretty sure who the happier manager was. !!!
