allforone1889
Andy Watkins stole the show on the opening day of there Western Premier League game on Saturday at Welton with a goal in each half the winner though didn't arrive until the 90th minute. City started brightly in the first half and although having to make several changes from the Vase Final side Dave Leonard side looked very strong on paper. It took City 17 minutes to take the lead, last season's leading marksman Stewart Yetton's shot from the edge of the area was only parried by the keeper and Watkins pounced to put city one up. Truro felt aggrieved ten minutes later after Kevin Wills seemed to of been brought down for a penalty but the officials thought otherwise, from the resulting corner Jake Ash saw his effort cleared off the line. Yetton should of made it two just before half time but he shot over when well placed with City's goal rarely threatened. What ever was said in the Welton changing room at half time seemed to work as the constantly caused City problems and on 56 minutes drew level after slack marking by the City defence. Truro lost Powell four minutes later with a mouth injury and Danny Harris replaced him however his league debut lasted just three minutes as he was sent off for a professional foul. With twenty minutes left the usual dependable Yetton failed to connect properly from a superb pass by Kevin Wills, but as everyone thought the game was going to end in a draw a through ball found Reski who's shot fell to Watkins who calmly dispatched the ball into the net. On reflection a draw would of been the fairest result but City's determination and never say die attitude saw the team through and they now look forward to there first home match on Saturday against Brislington _________________
Graham Martin
It will be harder this year... the 8,10,11 - nil wins of last season are unlikely to be repeated and City will have to fight hard to gain promotion again. However I believe they will do it. Then perhaps next year we can have a Southern League section on the website. We will probably still need a Western League one to cater for Falmouth/St.Blazey/Bodmin/Liskeard or Saltash if one of them qualifies and wants promotion. I would like to see more Cornish teams going up through the leagues. Look at the situation in Devon - 3 professional clubs and still with other teams in the Southern, Western and SWPL Leagues. allforone1889
I'm sure that any of the teams mentioned could achieve back to back promotions if they wished to progress to a higher tier, they have done before look at Falmouth Town yes the main problem for some teams may well be financial but with the right structure they can survive and progress.
