Holman SC 5-0 Penzance Reserves

Some people wonder what the SC part of Holman’s name is. Well it is Sports Club but I’m afraid they weren’t very sporting to the Magpies scoring five past our stand-in goalkeepers.

Once again we took away a depleted side of just eleven, including some walking wounded, and used two keepers during the match. George Hatton’s dad, Nick was roped in once again to assistant manager/first aid man.

Allen Spencer-Smith let in a quick double midway through the first half so handed to the gloves to Adam Hopkins who even though let in a further three was Penzance’s Man of the match for holding back Holman’s with several good saves.

The first 15mins the game is fairly routine with Holmans posing the slightly bigger threat having a good chance when breaking and crossing from the left only to see a diving header go past the near post. A long range shot dips down and goes just over the bar.

Holmans then get two in a minute. A diagonal ball left to right low across the pitch falls to Rob Press who runs down the 18yd line rounds the keeper a fires in at the back post.

From the kick-off Penzance lose the ball and Holmans kick it down the left channel, knock over a 10yd cross for a simple header from Jamie Cooper into an empty net from 3yds.

Penzance now swap keepers and with Spencer-Smith running the defence Holmans keep getting caught off-side much to their annoyance.

H-T

Holmans come out all guns blazing and get their third within a couple of minutes. A corner on the left comes over to the back post for Copper to head in from 6yds.

Holmans try a few long range shots with one going just wide of the left-hand post. They also get a free kick just in their half for an off-side. A long ball is knocked forward, a striker runs through and shoots from 15yds. Hopkins makes a great one-handed block and then clears the ball up-field.

Holmans are relentless with Penzance back peddling for most of the rest of the match.

The fourth goal goes in on 63mins when a cross pitch diagonal ball is met at the back of the box by Press who fires in a 15yd cross goal rising shot.

Hopkins can’t do much about the 5th that come three minutes later. A corner on the left is flicked on at the near post for Jason Blight to score with a 6yd rising shot from 6yds out.

It’s all Holmans now with Penzance getting the odd break. The last real action of the match sees Holmans knock the ball around the edge of the Penzance area before they cross from the left. Up goes a head knocking in a strong high ball but Hopkins is equal to it and makes a fantastic fingertip save to put the ball over the bar.

Cornwall Combination League

5th April 2011

Penzance Reserves 0-3 Wendron United

Another game, another defeat. Penzance just can’t get out of this losing streak having now won just once in their last 11 games. Even the inclusion of first team players does not seem to work. They really need a goal grabber up front. They create chances but can’t put them away.

Wendron are much improved this season and posed a threat all game. Early on they get a header in from 6yds but it goes over the bar, but their three goals all have an element of luck about them.

Penzance pass the ball around and it seems to work for the first 15mins then Wendron step up a gear and start to dominate.

A quick brace on 19 and 22mins seals the game. The first follows a break on the right to roughly 20yds from the corner flag. The ball is chipped over and clips the top of Charlie Penny’s head and goes in at the back post after wrong footing the keeper. The second again comes from a break down the right. The ball is flicked over, bounces up off a defender and into the path of Simon Williamson who fires in low from 12yds past a wrong footed Ryan Gendall.

A Wendron through ball is flicked of the strikers boot at the last minute by Penzance Man of the match Sean George. It was one of those moves when you know the striker will score until George got his foot in.

H-T

The game is fairly even for the first third of the second half then Wendron get their third on 59mins. Wendron work the ball around the middle of the park and seeing Gendall off his line Charlie Young sends in a 30yd screamer that Gendall pushes up. He takes so much sting out of the shot instead of it merrily going over the bar it drops down behind him and into the net.

Penzance win the ball on the edge of the box but a Joe Day shot goes wide of the post.

Penzance then get a rub of the green. Wendron have a corner on the right. The ball is knocked over, knocked out, a header in then hits the top of the post, bounces out, is chipped in for another header which rebounds back off the same post, down to the ground, a shot from 6yds and Gendall gets down to block.
