wonder winno wins league and cup double for newquay veterans

newquay veterans faced a strong liskeard side in the league cup final at st dennis on sunday, liskeard lead by ex county captain darren gilbert had a wealth of senior football experience , the game started with both teams trying to get a foothold in the game but liskeard were by far the best team and newquay struggled to get the ball. newquay this season have become a very resilant team and kept their shape and got players behind the ball, one tackle by john gosling on darren gilbert was worth the admission money alone and set the tempo for a sturling newqay performance ,john hodge tried to feed the forwards but rooney and forsyth were lonely figures and well defended by the liskeard defence, gilbert hodge mullis all had good shots saved and blocked by winno farrel macellor and fortune, newquay were glad to get in half time with the score 0-0 , the second half mirrored the first with liskeard looking dangerous newquay managed one shot on target in 90 mins with liskeard having a dozen corners and numerous shots saved by the newquay defence, on 80 mins winno came out and blocked a good run by gilbert but the ball broke to an unmarked mullis alone on the penalty spot with one defender on the line mullis drove the ball goal bound only to see an unbeleivable goal line clearance the goal bound shot behind him some how back flicking the ball over the bar and away, alan metters used the bench well bringing on swift up front but starved of service worked hard for the team with rooney, the last ten mins winno with some unbeleivable teckers made save after save to keep the score 0-0 and once again the dreaded penaltys, truscott and forsyth despatched theirs rooney missed and with liskeard netting all 3 pens newquay were chasing it, old steped up to net the fourth with liskeard replying through gilbert, then hodge drilled his in the bottom corner for colin barret to step up with the chance to win it for liskeard, winno threw his self to his right to deflect the ball away game on all equal again , darren fortune walked forward and again drilled the ball into the bottom corner , so it was to liskeards martin hodge he struck the ball goalwards winno again full length smothered the ball making sure the league cup was heading back to mount wise and the home of newquay vetrans .and they partied long into the night enjoying the league and cup double , liskeard would and rightly so feel gutted but newquays shape and workrate were unbroken in 90 mins, joint motm simmon winnan/john gosling, liskeard were by far the better side on the day ,but winno won the day for newquay, newquay still have the west v east league winners play off on sunday the 16th @ st dennis to look forward to making it a great season for newquay afc .
