Callington Town

Recommended Posts

The F A Cup result is published in the archives of the F A.and is genuine.

I wouldn't have thought there was much criteria in the way of acceptance in those days by looking at all the entries.

eg Green Waves from the P & D League.

I did see this Callington team in League tables after the War in the latter 1940's (Cornwall Senior League and Cornwall Senior Cup (league)

They must have played somewhere in the area.

Some information from a reader of the forum thank you:

In the early 1950s Callington were in the Plymouth and District League, and actually played in the Devon Senior Cup Final (circa 1953) when they lost to Clyst Valley. The game was played at Home Park, Plymouth.

A rule came in later stating that teams in the League were not permitted to have players living outside a 10 mile radius of their ground which was behind Travis Perkins in Liskeard Road. They overcame this by playing their home games at St.Dominick which enabled them to have Plymouth-base players (this village was reckoned to be 9 miles from Plymouth!).

The club was run by a Mr.Cox and Mr.Marquand : sadly, however, this venture lasted just one season and the Club ceased to exist until many years later.

Incidentally, a team was formed around 1970 called Callington Spurs run by Maurice Heath containing nearly all Plymouth players. They played about 1/2 mile from Kelly Bray on the Launceston Road - where the gravel tip is now.
