Cornwall Veterans League Results 14th Dec

Recommended Posts

Congratulations Martin!! Good to see how much the team has come on over the years. Remember my first ever vets game bout 11 years ago was against you at St.Blazey for John Peters St.Austell team and I scored 8 in a 14-0 win. I thought I like this vets league!!! Don't think such a defeat would happen these days mate!! To be fair half of us were still playing SWL at the time! You've always had a good bunch of lads and looked smart in your all orange Dutch kit! Nice to see where you are today!! Good luck for the rest of the season mate.

Cheers mate it is always nice to get positive feedback in any area of football. Our manager works his (bright orange) socks off sometimes to get us organised and very often has to pick me up due to my lack of ability to drive the morning after the night before but it is all played in the right spirit and the teams that are currently in the league all have some very good players.

I remember the old days and our kit hasnt changed much just a bit faded now, much like my basic skills and sprinting ability

Penzance Newlyn 2-2 “The Cruisers” Holmans

Att - 1 - Your Correspondent

Once again Penzance used time added on to save a point from a game that could have gone either way. The Holmans were a much bigger side physically, and had one or two quick players in their team, but the dismal weather, which turned the pitch at the Leisure Centre into a semi-quagmire was a match leveller. Both sides were caught out off-side several times as strikers were able to nip through quicker than defenders could turn in the mud. Usually players stand on the side-line nagging to be allowed on the field of play, but this time because of the weather, they were nagging to come off!

Credit must go to referee Wynroe Heath who kept the game going and played no injury time so we could all finish the quicker and get indoors!

The game kicks off with Holmans playing the long ball whilst Penzance try their passing game.

Holmans get the first chance with a through ball into the box, but a turn and shot from roughly 5yds is wide.

Holmans press strongly and it is no surprise when they take an early lead. From halfway inside the Penzance half a hopefully long slow volley by the striker drops behind keeper Peter Bainbridge.

Holmans have a good spell of possession forcing Penzance to defend in numbers.

Penzance’s only possession is on the break and on 17mins they equalise when Steve Semmens beats the off-side trap, rounds the keeper and walks the ball into the net.

Now it is the home sides turn to press forward having a shot blocked on the line, before forcing a fantastic leaping save from the Holmans keeper.

Holmans have the last shot of the half following a throw-in on their right. A ball to the edge of the box, sees the striker turn the defender but he shoots wide, right.

H-T

Ground conditions worsen due to the weather but the game flows back and forward but gradually Penzance get on top.

In the 62nd minute, against the run of play the visitors get their noses in front again when they press down their right, cross hard and the ball is deflected past the keeper for the striker to knock it in low from 6yds.

Illogan almost double their lead when a break on the right results in a shot that bounces off the post and down, and is cleared away.

A Penzance corner on their right is knocked to the back post where a free header is knocked just wide.

Penzance then start trying the long diagonal ball right to left but Semmens is caught odd-side several times.

A minute to go, one final diagonal ball to Semmens sees him side-step his defender and squeeze the ball in between keeper and post.

A draw and Penzance again let in two goals. Their record for their seven league and cup games played, two conceded every game.
