  1. Illogan 1, Falmouth Town 0 Close encounters of the usual kind. Very cold with a wicked sun shining towards the clubhouse at times. Neither side took advantage of it. Element of luck about the winning goal in the 14th minute. One of those free-kicks from way out on the left wing that was lifted towards the far post but no-one seemed to get a touch which the 'keeper might have expected and the ball just fell sweetly for Illogan and went inside that far post. We've all seen them before. Chance to increase the lead in the 29th - a soft-looking pen which the lad put not just over the bar but over the clubhouse as well! Just as well it didn't prove crucial! Good three points for Illogan though Falmouth might have gone home feeling hard done by. Good entertainment for the money, just ruddy cold. Some of the usual faces, though no Mona this week. Nice to catch a glance of Jeremy Eye - in shorts and flip-flops! I was sorry not to have had the opportunity to have a chat. Back in around 1977 he was one of my Redruth School U-12 5-a-side team which won Carn Brea's 1st Junior 5-a-side tournament. The team also included Ricci Pascoe of Bike Chain. Happy days! Nice hot choc at half time, served in a chunky bright pink Mini Mouse mug! Brought a smile to a few faces, just part of the crack!
  2. Div 2 West St Buryan linger just outside the automatic relegation places after nt exactly sneaking a point against 2nd placed Illogan Reserves. The gulf in points between the two sides was in no way reflected by the play on the day as St Buryan swept forwards time after time to threaten Illogan's goal. They deservedly went ahead on 27 minutes when Illogan, attempting to emulate the pros, went to play from the back only for a defender to be CIP (cardinal sin for a defender in my day!) and St Buryan were in the lead. It took Illogan until the 70th minute to equalise . St Bryan continued to press up the slope this half and took the lead again on 82, a fiercely struck close range volley from a right wing cross. They could not quite hold on for three points as Illogan forced one home in the 90th minute, only to miss a chance of a 3rd in stoppage time by the narrowest of margins. St Buryan were worth their point. Sparse attendance compared to a 1st team game but no less enthralling. No tea hut but the clubroom provided me with a cup of tea which was very much appreciated. Mona appeared again today and I tried to encourage him to look for the positives and to try and enjoy himself. Don't know if I succeeded!
  3. Prem West Illogan RBL 6 Redruth United 0 After conceding 6 last week Illogan perked up a bit and went into a 3 - 0 lead in just 9 minutes. 1 - 0 (2), a Cundy header from a left wing corner, 2 - 0 (6) a header from a left wing cross in open play, then a Cundy header from another left wing corner on 9. 4 - 0 (24) and I think that was another headed goal after the striker chipped the 'keeper and had to finish off from close range as the ball bounced. 5 - 0 just before half time (42), a good diagonal move from right to the left near post. Only 1 goal 2nd half, the best IMHO, a low drive from the left channel on 64. At least in this game an Illogan team did better down the slope (1st half)! The ref allowed no added-on time in the 2nd half, playing just seconds over the 45 by my stop watch. No reason apparent: the light was okay and the pitch was holding up well. With so many games off today, credit to the club. Hot choc still a quid, very warming. Some good banter and company in the stand as usual except Mona missed this one: not a lot to moan about in this one!
  4. Prem West 1 Illogan RBL 3, St Just 6 A very competitive game in unpleasant conditions, the last 10 minutes or so played in deep gloom with heavy very cold rain for much of the 2nd half. 0 - 1 (13) Ashley Ellis 1 - 1 (24) Jordan Knuckey. Everyone stopped for an offside shout with the Lino pretty indecisive and after a pause in play Knuckey, hearing no whistle, took advantage. 1 - 2 (36) T inners' No 6 1 - 3 (40) Jack Wills 1 - 4 (44) o.g. 2 - 4 (45) Ned Pritchard 2 - 5 (51) Ellis again 2 - 6 (84) ?? header from a left-wing corner. 3 - 6 (90) Steve Abbott penalty. Plenty of goals for the entry money! Brings St Just level on points with Illogan in mid-table, with, strangely, a far worse goal difference. Hot choc still the standard £1 but certainly welcome on a day like today! Big UP for the teahut lady! Isaac Rosenberg would have enjoyed this one. Many of the usual faces: Simon and his mates, Clive Roberts, Mona (for about 30 minutes spanning half-time), David James and of course Lester Thomas who has taken a bit of a step back but still serves the club despite being the same age as me!
  5. Junior Cup Illogan Res 1, Lanreath Res 3 There must have been some damaged handbags in the dressing rooms after this game! The result was right but it was a "spirited" game. Lanreath's No 9 ("Arry") was a bit overexcited at times and in contrast the ref stopped the game whilst the home 'keeper had his bootlace tied for him. Yes, really! Game after game I despair about what the game I used to play has become! After having the bulk of the possession and chances in the first half it took until the 45th minute for Lanreath to break the deadlock. 2nd half and Illogan were kicking down the slope and in keeping with the last few games I've seen, both 1st and 2nd XIs, they fared worse. There was a time when that slope was worth an extra player. Illogan's No 8 equalised on 59 from the spot and their prospects looked brighter. For 3 minutes. A Lanreath lad attacked the left channel and a shot across the 'keeper made it 1 - 2. On 79, Lanreath looked set to settle the tie with a penalty but it was well saved by Illogan's 'keeper at the foot of his right-hand post. This kick had to be delayed due to an outbreak of handbaggery in the centre circle. Lanreath went down to 9 men temporarily as whilst their centre back was sin-binned, their No 8, already booked, showed his disdain for a referee's decision by kicking the ball far away in a fit of pique. So understandably off he went, not appearing to understand why (perhaps someone will enlighten him later. I just hope he didn't use all the hot water....) Losing by one goal, the Illogan defence employed the good old "play from the back" malarky and obligingly gave the ball away on the edge of their box. This tactic led to Lanreath's 3rd goal, timed at 90+7. The final whistle blew in the 16th minute of added on time: nice to see Dave Deacon there, whose stopwatch agreed with mine. Lots of other familiar faces there, considering it was a 2nd team game. Apart from Deaks there were Dave James, B. Manning of this forum, Clive Roberts, Moaner, the Tea Lady (hot choc £1 still) - and so it was an altogether enjoyable afternoon despite the weather. The pitch looked great, by the way so well done Illogan.
  6. Illogan 1 - 1 Torpoint Res (Torpoint won 4 - 3 on pens) 0 - 0 at half-time with Illogan to play down the slope 2nd half. Torpoint physically bigger and generally faster, so a handful for Illogan, still smarting after their 7 - 2 defeat to St Day last week. Torpoint went ahead on 74, a long cross-field ball to the RW resulting in a fine save by Wyatt who could only parry the ball to a Torpoint forward who could hardly miss. Rear-guard action thereafter by Torpoint who defended efficiently until the 7th minute of added-on time when a now 10-man Illogan equalised from a LW corner, headed home at the far post. Extra time brought no further goals so it was down to pens. Now my philosophy was to use my chosen five penalty takers in reverse order of likelihood to score, but Wyatt stepped up to take Illogan's first and instead of hitting full force down the middle as the 'keeper (usually) dives out of the way, he tamely put it wide. Torpoint scored their first three whilst Illogan did score their next two. Then Wyatt saved Torpoint's 4th, the next Illogan lad scored to make it 3 - 3. Now the pressure was on for Illogan's 5th penalty which the lad obviously had to score, (hence my tactic) but it was saved! Torpoint's fifth kicker scored and that was it. Extra time and pens made it value for money: just a shame the tea-hut closed before 90 mins, otherwise I'd have had a 2nd hot choc! 70-odd spectators, and a happy journey east for the visiting team and supporters.
  7. Quite an exciting first half after which Illogan appeared to fold. They led in the 8th minute, Saints equalised a minute later only to go behind again in the 14tyh. T that point they deserved their lead I what appeared to be a very evenly-matched game. On 26 Saints equalised again, this time going 3 - 2 up on the half-hour. Still no sign of what was. to come. Another 5 mins passed and Saints made it 4 - 2 and that was half-time. Somehow the 2nd half saw Illogan creating a few chances but not converting them to get back into the game, and Saints' goals were added in the 50th, 79th and, bizarrely, the 90+5th! Looks a bit of a rout on paper. Well attended (see Markey's number) at the expense of sloppy parking blocking the village for quite a while! So St Day march on.
  8. Illogan RBL 12, Helston Raiders 0 At half-time (10 - 0) one of Illogan's regulars, Clive Roberts, asked what I would find to say about this game! Well he might. This Junior Cup matched pitched current leaders of Div 2 West against the current bottom side in Div 4 so I hadn't expected much. Illogan played up the slope 1st half and scored in the 2nd, 5th, 11th, 22nd, 28th, 29th, 31st, 34th, 40th and 45th minutes. In the 33rd minute Helston's gazelle-like No 99 hit the post with a free-kick. I had so wanted it to go in! Settling down with my hot chocolate (£1) for the 2nd half I kept my pen and notebook handy for the anticipated torrent of goals; but it's a funny old game! Illogan only managed 2 more, in the 50th (I thought, yes, here we go!) and 67th minutes. Helston haven't had a win so far this season and were hardly likely to get it here, but they had 3 or 4 coachable players (2 or 3 who hadn't a clue) and came with 3 or 4 subs, so well done them. There were one or two family men in their one-up, with WAGS and kids in attendance, so all credit to them. They clearly want to play football and why shouldn't they? I imagine they pay to play, for pitch hire, laundry, refs, competition entry and so on, so truly represent "grass roots" football which the FA seems to mean clubs at Truro City's level; and long may they keep going. They played with tremendous spirit and sportsmanship and deserved a goal They defended like troupers in the 2nd half, with three or four goal-line clearances and many good saves by their 'keeper who wasn't bad at all. Good banter, though, and some entertaining youths from Helston in the stand: the girl, about 17yo, must have been freezing in her skimpy outfit. Just a pity she pretended to smoke! (Like so many of us did at that age!). Now, where are the other match reports?
  9. St Piran Prem West Illogan RBL 0, Mousehole Devel 1 The game at Carharrack was postponed so I rocked up to Oxland Parc, where the Mousehole fans far outnumbered the Home supporters! A game of four clear chances, two each, the visiting 'keeper earning the 3 points for Mousehole. I don't count tame free kicks that go straight into the 'keeper's arms or way over the bar. 0 - 0 at half time with Mousehole looking stronger down the slope, but neither 'keeper was tested beyond fielding or punching away the odd corner. Mousehole's players were vocally dominant which helped their cause. Half time, a wee and a hot chocolate (£1) (the chocolate, that is) and the interesting (to me) fact that Mousehole took a couple of their subs into the dressing room with the starting eleven. Always took the subs in at half time, me. I wanted them to be part of the team and to hear all the half time chat. Anyway, after just a couple of minutes the Mousehole 'keeper saved brilliantly to his right, stopping a nailed-on goal from the first goal-bound shot of the game by either side. Then on 52 mins a hotly-disputed penalty awarded to Illogan by the ref, who was watching all the I-dotting and t-crossing as he was being assessed. The Mousehole 'keeper saved brilliantly to his left at the foot of the post - his 3rd pen save this season, apparently. 9 minutes later, capping off a breakaway as Mousehole had been being forced to defend for long periods thus far since the restart, Kyle Fraser lashed in a 30 yarder to beat the home 'keeper (WAS that Barry Wyatt?) out of the blue. Illogan continued to have most of the possession but Mousehole, rather than manage the game out, kept attacking when they could and the game's 4th chance was well-saved to deny Mousehole the chance to seal the points. Mousehole are clearly well-coached but a bit of time ought to be spent on game management, as they conceded too many free kicks and corners in the last 10 or 15 minutes. Although Illogan lost, it was an entertaining game to watch (though the Assessor didn't seem to think so, saying that "nothing much was happening here" in a 'phone call at half time). Attendance must have exceeded 100, boosted by the aforementioned visiting fans.
  10. Div 2 West Illogan RBL Res 3, Perranwell Res 0 Quite a gap in the table between these two so this was only really a modest 3 points for Illogan. !st goal on 18, a fine strike from outside the box into the top right corner. 2nd goal on 28, a strong header from the left channel; third goal on 53: must say, I saw what seemed like a blatant two-handed push by a home player in the build-up before the ball was played in from the right and eventually found its way into the net. Best player on the pitch was, I thought, Perranwell's number 9 who deserved a goal for all the running he did. The Illogan lad who takes their free kicks was unlucky: one beat the wall, and with the 'keeper standing still, struck the right post. His next effort went over the wall and hit the bar! Third FK of his went through the wall but into the 'keeper's arms. Quietly reffed on the day, no controversies. Lovely day for footy. Nice Chatter with Dave James, B.Manning and the Lad who follows Titans; Best comment from a visiting player's mum who opined that the orange kit didn't suit her son! Free entry, of course, and half-time hot choc the standard £1. Pleasant afternoon's entertainment. Might have been more entertaining down Newlyn by the look of it, and obviously a happy afternoon at Hayle!
  11. 3 West. Where are all the reports? Am I missing something? Carharrack 0, Probus 3 So Probus continue their march to promotion . There was no referee so the visitors agreed that the Carharrack manager could officiate. He is somewhat limited by a bad limp, but without him there would have been no game, which a couple of the travelling supporters needed to understand. A header of a free kick on 19 made it 0 - 1 and a low drive from probably outside the box made it 0 - 2. Fine goal. Probus hadn't looked too confident until these goals went in and from then on Carharrack were limited to breaking out of defence to pose any threat, but they defended stubbornly for the rest of the half. 2 - 0 down at half-time, Carharrack conceded an o.g. after just 2 minutes from the restart. A Probus player shouted "they'll fold now", which lack of respect for his opponents was probably the best incentive the Reds could have had. They continued to defend stubbornly, admittedly riding their luck at times, and even had the ball in the net on 76 only for offside to be given. A visiting fan shouted at the stand-in ref, after claiming a foul, "It helps you get outside the centre circle, ref!" to which the ref fittingly replied: "I'm disabled, so if other people could get off their arses..." Quite right. The geezer did a difficult job and the Probus players showed much more respect than that supporter, even in the tick of the game. Very few appeals and I saw no arguments from them. The game was played in good spirit, when it so easily have been played at all. Carharrack were a bit light-weight, too often being muscled off the ball; and with that fierce low sun in the Probus 'keeper's eyes, I didn't see a single deliberate attempt by Carharrack's players to try to drop a long lob under the bar with the 'keeper struggling to see. Never mind. Tea Hut open as usual run by the manager's wife (well done and thank you), but the grass is still too long. Get some sheep in (memories of Carharrack's Combination League days in the mid 70s on their former pitch towards United Downs!)🐑🐑
  12. I've had to flick around the topics to find out where to write this. I (and probably others) am still confused. Percy Stephens (who he?) Cup Carharrack (Div 2 West) 3, St Just Reserves (Div 3 West) 5 Hard to understand why St J Res aren't doing so much better in their Division than they currently are as by half time it was hard to see which was the team from the lower Division. Whilst I still don't recognise any of the Carharrack players from last season I can't comment on whether or not they fielded a weakened side; but St J Res certainly matched them. They may have had the game of their lives, of course, as can happen in cup games when you face opposition from a higher Division. No matter. St Just took the lead in the 3rd minute, a simple direct header from a right wing corner. Carharrack equalised on 11 minutes, a low drive through a crowded box. Then we witnessed an extraordinary act of sportsmanship as, with St J mounting a threatening-looking attack a Carharrack defender went in for a challenge and somehow injured himself, leaving a St J player free and in possession at the edge of the Carharrack box, with green-shirted players in front of goal. Instead of crossing or shooting, the lad turned and played the ball into touch so the injured player could be seen to. I must say, back in the day, I would have played on! In the 42nd minute it was 2 - 1 to Carharrack, a corner not cleared then knocked back in for a hotly-disputed "offside" goal. A St J player was sin-binned for his objections. In the 2nd half St J had another early goal (47) for 2 - 2 after hitting the bar but fell behind again (60) when their 'keeper rolled the ball out to a player who wasn't looking! In nipped a forward to take advantage. I thought "here we go" but events proved otherwise. There was an equalising penalty on 65 and Carharrack seemed to wilt a bit. A free-kick was half cleared by Carharrack only for the ball to be knocked goal wards and St J were 4 - 3 up (73). St Just continued to press and tackled like mad and a rebound off a forward as a home defender tried to clear fell to a green shirt who made it 5 - 3! Game over. Att around 40, good contingent of WAGS with kids from way down West! At least this week there were one or two people who know me, so that helped!
  13. Div 3 West Carharrack 7, St Ives Mariners Res 0 The first 19 minutes was all Mariners with shots, saves, corners: then in the 20th minute, the Reds broke away and scored against the run of play thus far. 2 - 0 in the 37th, giving Carharrack what to me was a surprising lead, based on the play. 2nd half, kicking down the slope, a deflected shot on 54 made it three, then possibly the best goal. Long ball headed on to a forward who went on a solo run and ended up scoring. Fumble by the visiting 'keeper let in the 5th on 84, then a soft penalty on 87 made it 6 and another 'keeper fumble (who'd be a 'keeper?!) allowed the 7th in the 88th minute. Haven't a clue who scored. There wasn't a player in the Carharrack team I recognised from last season; another new manager. Didn't see a soul I knew or could chat to, just half-a-dozen kids running up and down and sometimes screaming along the touchline the whole game. I wonder parents don't worry about their offspring being harmed by a ball or player but I'm just old, I guess. Grass was far too long and the men's loo has no light. Sorry to hear Val has been poorly. I do hope she gets better soon. She has my best wishes. Her locum- Sharon? - in the tea hut did a grand job.
  14. Illogan RBL 2, Perranwell 0 So relieved to be able to drive to a game at last! My 1st game this season. A fellow spectator summed it up: "3 points from a below-average performance". I thought Illogan were in for a cruise after they took a 2 - 0 lead by half-time. A corner from the right was headed home in the 11th minute and a 25 yard drive was deflected en route to the goal in the 35th. This, up the slope, so I expected Illogan to at least double their lead by full time; but it was not to be. Perranwell dug in and defended well, with a few probing runs forward, though Barry Wyatt was rarely troubled in the Illogan goal. Illogan huffed and puffed but couldn't get another goal. Touching scenes pre-k.o. as many of the spectators joined the teams around the centre circle for a minute's silence to respect the passing of a well-known long-term supporter. Never seen that before - amazing! If the game wasn't that entertaining I was entertained by a small group of WAGS/Yummy Mummies in front of me whose chatter about weddings and schools kept me quite transfixed for a lot of the time. Good, also, to hear so many positive comments coming from Simon and his usual friends who came into the stand to get out of the rain. So often there are some right moaners in the stand who don't seem to realise this isn't THE Premier League! Hot choc £1 - so glad to have been welcomed back and resumed some sort of normality. Perhaps a few more reviewers will appear once people get used to the new format, which we must accept has been forced by the league's reorganisation.
  15. Thanks - our neighbours have us pretty well covered but I appreciate the thought. Some points on the board would be nice.........
