Yes, it’s the First Round of the Durning Lawrence Charity Cup on Saturday!

This competition tends to be overshadowed by both the Senior and Junior Cups which is a shame considering monies raised from it always, as the title suggests, goes to a worthwhile charity.

This season the chosen charity is CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and their families.

Just to let you know a little more about the charity, basically they provide the clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help families cope with cancer and get the most out of life. From diagnosis onwards, the aim is to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.

Any money raised for CLIC Sargent from the Charity Cup Competition will make a huge difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer and so if you can get to a game, don’t forget your presence is going towards a worthy cause.

With the majority of the contestants coming from Division One of the South West Peninsula League, it means last season's winners Callington Town FC are not able to defend the trophy having been promoted into the League’s Premier Division, however there are still a number of interesting games.

Here’s the full draw, along with my prediction (for what it’s worth) :-

Perranporth v Penryn Athletic

(normally the bottom side of the league would look at a cup game as a welcome distraction, but Perranporth, although having home advantage are in for a tough game against a Penryn side going well in the league)

Sticker v Liskeard Athletic

(Liskeard beat Sticker at Lux Park less than a fortnight ago, since when both sides won 3-2 last Saturday. Tough one to call, but I fancy Andy Avery’s side to get revenge)

Penzance v St Dennis

(in-form side St Dennis are on 9 straight league wins and so sorry but surely Penzance have no chance!)

Porthleven v Wadebridge Town

(Wadebridge are struggling on the road this season as they still await their first point from 5 games. It all points to Porthleven’s manager Dennis Annear awaiting the quarter final draw news!)

Helston Athletic v Wendron

(This local derby sees one of only two non-SWPL sides in action as Paul Murray takes his side to Kellaway Park for what is surely going to be a difficult tie for the Jollys Cornwall Combination side against the Blues, one of the teams tipped to go all the way in this cup)

Mousehole v Bude Town

(Bude make the longest trip of the afternoon to Trungle Parc where they have already lost. The scoreline then in mid-September was a resounding 7-0 to Wayne Quinn’s side who will be hoping to go a step further than last season’s semi-final)

Illogan RBL v Millbrook

(The two newcomers to the SWPL clash at what is fast becoming “Fortress Oxland Parc” for Illogan. Millbrook are without a league win since early September and so everything points to another home success for Mikey Pascoe’s men)

Dobwalls v Polperro

(Last season’s finalists play hosts to the other non-SWPL side who are pretty much mid-table at the moment in the Cornish Guardian East Cornwall Premier. I don’t expect any cup shock here either!)

We are endeavoring to boost the profile of the competition by nameing the 'Charity' before the tournament begins.

There will be a collection taken at each match. So hopefully by the time the final takes place a really good sum of money will be raised.

Surly there's still room for SWP league premier clubs to be involved. Wasn't long ago that St Blazey won all 4 titles up for grabs and am I right in thinking Bodmin matched that achievement? All adds to the charity the more sides involved surly.

Dobwalls v Polperro

As part of the setup at Polperro AFC, we feel extremely privileged to be part of this annual event.

The vast majority of the squad are all local lads and have grown up together right from lower echelons of Duchy football through to the ECPL.

I know they are all thoroughly looking forward to the test at Lantoom Park. Massive underdogs with nothing to lose, whatever the result it'll be a good day out.

If anything, it'll be good experience for when they play Bodmin the Senior Cup

Great effort from all the Polperro lads against Dobwalls, took them all the way and it could have gone either way.

One could have been forgiven for thinking that Dobwalls had all the play and Polperro were hanging on, but as the spectators saw, Polperro played some sublime football and at times out played their South Western rivals.

Ref Steve Nute didn't have the best of days, but I'm not one for ref bashing, we all have our bad days.

Good luck to Dobwalls in the remainder of the competition.

And it looks like the other non SW side Wendron took Helston all the way as well.

This was a good competitive game and credit must go to Polperro for a gutsy display.

I think the superior fitness levels of the hosts was the telling factor as the game wore on.
