applying for south western league but never having played

Recommended Posts

have any teams ever applied for the south western league but never played in it? porthleven made several unsuccessful applications before getting lucky in 1967. in 1966 plymouth command, porthleven and liskeard all applied with only the latter taking it seven votes to six. league secretary tony jewells was always asking exeter, torquay and newton spurs and on one occasion bideford to come back. after argyle withdrew in 1965 he asked the club to reconsider but as they'd been fined £50 they refused unless the fine was scrapped. they were informed that as they hadn't given provisional notice in time it would stand

For the period you're mentioning - I would say yes!

ECPL Champions 1966/67, 67/68, 68/69

Runners-up 1962/63

League Cup winners 1967, 1968, 1969

Evely Cup winners 1967, 1968

Also Cornwall Charity Cup runners-up 1972. Again lost to St Austell, but this time only 4-1

Did they join the Plymouth & District League after this period?

Looe's very successful P & D side was composed almost entirely of Plymouth players.

In the early seventies they ran a reserve side in P & D 1 to attract local players, but the teams were run as separate entities

All the dosh was raised by one individual and when he became to old to raise the money the club in that particular guise went under

Some locals then re started the club and applied to the Duchy league. They had to start in the third division.

After winning that in the first year they applied for ECPL status with the seconds in Duchy

For thirty / forty years since it was ECPL / P & D / Duchy / P & D until the club has lately been a continuous member of the Duchy for ten - fifteen years

But to answer your question - Yes they were very good - Seen some senior cup games at the old Hay Lane with 200 - 300 watching
