Could the Clarets suffer from Torpoint's surprise Senior Cup defeat last week?

Bit surprised the Witheridge match against title chasers St Austell got an early postponement call. I know of someone who yesterday was standing on the pitch and reckoned it was in good shape. Little or no rain forecasted last night or today either!

Shocking from witheridge have they really followed the new correct procedure of postponing a game on the swpl website. Have a look Mr hiscox at this please . This is not the first time for witheridge !!

What is the correct procedure? The league posted on their Postponement forum at about 9.15 so presumably because of that one has to assume the club did everything ok!

Witheridge - could be a frozen pitch - very high laying pitch up there. I'm sure the Clarets are prepared for anything from Torpoint today. I understand the reason given was "waterlogged"

Post by Phil Hiscox on the SWPL Forum.

No other news to report, a couple of clubs had unofficial inspections (Exwick & Okehampton that I know of) but all games other than Witheridge are ON.

I dont need to say it, but I will, a senior referee inspected Witheridge this morning as per rule and declared pitch out. In fact he was concerned that with the heavy frost on the pitch thawing during the day, St Austell could have been made to travel and then found the game called off when they arrived, and nobody wants that.

..........

Up here in North Devon we were battered hard by the storm on Thursday night with heavy rain. That was followed by an unsettled day yesterday with showers and no wind followed by a clear night with heavy frost which froze the already waterlogged pitch. With the pitch still waterlogged underneath the ice Senior Referee Cameron Mann inspected and made the decision to call it off.

Perhaps an apology is in order for your direspectful remarks MoneyMan.

Highly disappointing to have a senior club official especially a chairman saying such unfair things about another club.

How ironic! After the comments on here and Twitter regarding today's game at Edge Down Park being called off! St Austell 2nds home game against Holsworthy has also been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

One of St.Austell commttee was at Witheridge yesterday and tweeted that the pitch was very wet/soggy but had no standing water. What can you do if the ref says unplayable?

Bad news for St.Austell though - already behind with league games and still in all cup competitions inc Vase. Great to be on the run we are but could have done with playing today. The inevitable backlog as the season goes on could well affect our title aspirations - thankfully we have a big squad.

Fingers crossed now for good results from St.Blazey (cant bring myself to actually hope they win!!) and Exmouth.

Newquay AFC 1 v 3 Cullompton Rangers

Simply a shockingly bad performance from The Peppermints. Other than a 15 minute spell in which Drummond pulled a goal back to make it 1-2, this was just not good enough from players who individually are decent players, but the 'gel' is missing.

News that two signings are heading to Mount Wise Stadium in the next week + Lewis Hilton back for Xmas might help, but the terrace talk was of renewing friendships with Mousehole & Millbrook next season.

I can't comment further, I won't single out individuals, the above says everything you need to know. I now have programme notes to write for the visit of table topping Ivybridge next Saturday... deep joy !

Have to agree with Nemesis on this performance.

Possession given away far too cheaply and frequently. I can't recall a "second ball" won in the 90 minutes and the lack of leadership was again all too obvious.

Things improved a little when Alex Cole came on but the ball didn't reach him often enough and it took over 80 minutes for his full back to go beyond him and cross. Indeed many of the crosses attempted by Newquay failed to beat the first man.

Cullompton looked well organised and passed the ball well with their right winger being a key man but Newquay made them look better than they are.

A dominating leader at the heart of their defence is a must and perhaps a revival might then be feasible.

Maybe you could have a chat with today's Ref at Ivybridge then. St Blazey 2v1 up. The Ref then gives a handball in the box for absolutely nothing. No hands in the air or reaching for the ball. Ridiculous. No doubt trying to please the Ivybridge bench who gave him plenty of stick for giving an early penalty to St Blazey. After that it turned into a nightmare but the decision changed the game. We're a bit to nice. Clearly shouting the loudest gets the decisions.

The other 5 goals were who's fault!

Once again it is typical of the officials to call a game off when the weather is fine and obviously any minor freezing would soon disappear. The swpl officials have got to look more closely as regards the criteria for calling games off.

Which bit of

"a senior referee inspected Witheridge this morning as per rule and declared pitch out. In fact he was concerned that with the heavy frost on the pitch thawing during the day, St Austell could have been made to travel and then found the game called off when they arrived, and nobody wants that"

do you not understand?

Who makes the rules, the swpl officials or the FA and does the ref. still get his hefty fee for the inspection ?

I can't speak for all referees but I know most if doing a local inspection won't charge any fee. If the appointed referee turns up at the ground and calls the game off they are technically entitled to mileage plus half a match fee.

RE: Guidance from FA which covers the Supply League.

FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION DIRECTIVE

Recommended procedure for the guidance of Clubs and Referees

in determining the suitability of grounds in adverse weather conditions

Each Club must take every precaution to ensure that its ground is in a fit playing condition.

When the regional weather conditions are known to be extreme (e.g. prolonged severe frost, clear water logging or heavy snow) then the game can be postponed at the discretion of the League following consultation with the League Secretary, League Rules will apply; this is not an issue for the match day Referee. Should a Competition decide to agree to an early postponement under such circumstances there will be no requirement for a pitch inspection.

In all other circumstances and subject to the time and travelling distance, the match Referee should be called in to make a decision. In the event of the match Referee being unable to carry out the inspection, the Home Club must select an alternative Referee listed within the National List of Supply Referees (Level 4) or in exceptional cases a senior level 5 or a member of the list of assessors.

If a specific League Rule exists where the timing of a pitch inspection is stated, this will apply but is a League issue only. The South West Peninsula League Rules do not list a time as such but requires inspections to be carried out on the day of the match and in such time as to prevent unnecessary travelling of the away team.

Prior to reaching a decision the Referee who is making the inspection must:

o Consult with the match Referee prior to the inspection

o Consult with the match Referee during / after the inspection to mutually

agree on a decision prior to notifying the Home Club Secretary and the League Secretary.

Prior to reaching a decision the Referee who is making the inspection should consider the following:

o Whether or not the ground (playing area) is dangerous (e.g. ice / frost)

o Whether or not that the spectator standing areas are dangerous (e.g. ice / frost)

o Whether or not conditions are or could turn farcical

o The views of the Home Club Groundsman in terms of local knowledge

and draining capabilities in the event of standing water

o The existing condition of the playing surface in conjunction with the

prevailing weather conditions as previously confirmed with the local

weather authority

o Inspect thoroughly – use a ball, and playing staff if necessary

o Fog creates its’ own problems – check forecast (remember that there is a responsibility to paying spectators)

o When dealing with such elements as frost or ice – remember that the

highest temperature of the day is usually around mid-day. Get a forecast if necessary of the projected temperature for the time when the match is due to conclude

o The manpower available to the Home Club to carry out any necessary

work to make the ground playable

o The time the visiting Club are due to commence their journey

o Liaise with Managers BUT the decision as to whether the match is played

is yours

If after consultation with the match Referee, the ground is declared fit and the away Clubs instructed to travel, then only in exceptional circumstances should the match Referee reverse the decision.

If an early inspection has not been carried out and the match Referee arrives at the ground to find the playing conditions in doubt due to unexpected deterioration in the weather, he should first consider as many of the above points before committing himself to a decision.
