ECPL - Front runners

Recommended Posts

With the league starting to take shape and having seen most teams play i was just wondering which teams people thought have been the most impressive early on in the season. For me it would have to be Tavistock so far- strong squad and good manager.Edgcumbe are still probably the favourites though in my opinion with a good squad and plenty experience at this level.

The top 5/6 teams have all started fairly well, Tavistock have been impressive, so have Launceston. To be fair, any team that has a first team to call on will always do ok, with no parkway to spoil the fun, Torpoint have to be favourites, much more experience then the likes of Edgcumbe, polperro, etc but Saltash will be around there, a young, inpressive squad has been built there in the summer.

Edgcumbe should definitely be up there if they have the squad they did last season, and unless Torpoints has dramatically changed from last season without adding any quality players, not forgetting they have a first team (which is fine, good clubs run that way) then I would say amongst most ECPL fans, they'd be favourites. But looking at the teams in it, it sound be competitive. Early days.

The issue of an ECPL squad being a second team is a two edged sword - the ECPL in a well run club will supplement the first team - the first team will use the ECPL to get match fitness. Also a player that excels in the ECPL is likely to be promoted to the firsts. You sign for a club not a squad.

Torpoint have signed a few but also lost several top players be it to Uni or the First team. Difficulty is for an ECPL manager is that anyone he signs who is good enough will be taken into the first team Squad. Therefore I still feel the likes of Edgcumbe are still the favourites for the league

Imagine you're in the minority there Nutmeg, from the number of signings Torpoint have made apparently then they'll be fine. Torpoints always been a good club in using players between teams, and some of the better players choose where to play (which I don't agree with), Lewis Kershaw should of been with the firsts for years but stays with the seconds. Must frustrate the first team manager, and you'll always get key players back from uni at important times. Plus you can use as many senior players between the team as you like. Must say tho, don't write of teams like Tavistock who have had a resurgence through the club. Good luck to all teams.

I agree it is a big weekend this week in the ECPL we will have a clearer picture of whose going to challenge this year come 5pm Saturday. Be interesting to see how Launceston will fair with the disarray in their first team it might have a knock on affect.Tavi have been the team for me this year definite dark horses

Weekends top of the table predictions

Edgcumbe 6 Launceston 1

Torpoint 1 Tavistock1

I'd heard from a torpoint lad (albeit not a torpoint player) you had signed a couple from St Dom, 1 or 2 from saltash? And the Walters lad & another, don't know where from. Seems ppl are getting a bit irate about saying torpoint have a strong squad and are league favourites? You're meant to build a good squad so well done to the manager. All a bit strange. Good luck with the season.

2 from st dom and 1 from Saltash left to join a Better side . as was not enjoying there football . Is acceptable to wanna improve and win games. Come dwn the mill and watch then oldfan u might understand then . the football they play is top notch very young and attacking side . As for the first team that's how a good club is run all players signed for both sides and if ur doing well at ecpl u will get a Chance Gary hird / Ben waters / Reece shanley .

then if ur not getting minutes u could have to possibility to play for the seconds .

Nutmeg that Lewis kershaw is definitely good enough to play for the firsts just is captain of the seconds and loves playing for them . Great lad great skip .and sorry Ben Walters . He played in the prem for years with numerous sides so prob was expected to get a shout as scored many goals in a short space of time for the seconds . Did hear tho the seconds wanted him to stay . Gary hird good prospect and just needs to

Deliver final ball . Been very impressed with Reece shanley . Dean and guy and Darren doing the bizz in my opinion. the team to beat

Understand what Thebadgeontheshirt, I think you've completely missed the point here.

1. I agreed with you that Torpoint will win the league.

2. When have I said anything negative about signing on players? I've said the opposite, of course you strengthen, nothing wrong with that what so ever.

3. Didn't I say that's how good clubs run? using players between the teams, great way to run a club.

Would love to be able to watch more games but working Saturdays prevents that.

The only thing, which again you've agreed with, is second teams players that should be taking the step to first team but don't, they want to stay with the seconds, which is fair enough, but as I said, must be fustrating for a first team manager. You're obviously a fan/player Thebadgeontheshirt so hopefully I've clarified what I meant for you. Good look to you and the rest of the gents.

Tom, thanks for your concern over our players. Yes, we did use Hicksy yesterday as we were struggling for a side for various reasons. But as you know, he has been signed for us for the last 10 years so it's always an easy option to bring him in as he fits in so well. As for Ryan, he has left Parkway so doesn't currently have a club so it suited us both for him to be involved with us yesterday. Hopefully he'll make many more appearances for us. Hope that clears that one up for you?

Not sure how it will stop people moaning about Elburton playing Ivybridge players though? Especially as your side were the main culprits of this earlier in the season. Ironic really.

This is always a popular subject that many people have different opinions on. Mine is that, as long as it is within the rules then there is no issue. It can however backfire for several reasons. You sometimes upset regular players or the players coming in aren't as committed as the result doesn't mean as much. But it keeps people debating I guess.

Anyway, good result for you boys again yesterday?

Men against boys yesterday for tavistock. Had 3 out, Billy Mcgowan jumped up to the first team and Ryan Moorhead left to go Parkway firsts so 5 in total, no excuse still for a no show. Torpoint were always on top and as Dean says above if the rules allow people to play and you are fortunate to sign them then play them. Good bench yesterday too Dean.

Good luck for the season mate

They're signed for Bodmin but but by all accounts they haven't played since pre-season, no camparison. That said, absolutely nothing wrong with a manager going and signing players where he can, is it about making friends or winning games? But it is ridiculous players playing for a team and not the club. You sign for a team, you help the club out.

Back to a more positive note, Torpoint surely stamped there authority on the league with an empahtic win over Tavistock. Team to beat, can't see them losing!

Tom played for Bodmin against Torpoint in the CSWPL first game of the season and has covered for Miller as required. Hicksie has played for Torpoint Duchy, SWL, ECPL and CSWPL. He has also donated money to the clubs stand so hardly a ringer. Ryan has played a number of games for Torpoint a few seasons ago before going to Parkway.

Not too sure it matters Teflon . The rules are in place for a reason and as long as people stick to them there shouldn't be any complaints. Since I've been involved in local football no side has won the league due to so called "ringers" it's the core of plays week in week out that matter come May. It is also vital the manager does his job and manages the players he has available. Rikki shepard represented Bodmin this evening and will be back involved in the ECPL again at the weekend. The only people who complain are those not good enough to compete with these so called better players. No one will be talking about Elburton past Christmas
