F A Vase 1st Round St Austell v Saltash United

Recommended Posts

Hopefully we will give a better account of ourselves this time. We got absolutely spanned last time, against arguably the best team in the league. I'm sure St Austell will be pretty confident on the win, but we all know what happened at Blaise Park mid week, and no-one expected that, did they????

Up the ashes!!!!

Fair play to st Austell. Another good performance. The game was effectively over at half time, but the ashes performance was a lot better 2nd half.

We never seem to have a full strength squad when we visit Poltair. Yesterday , on the bench we had one first teamer, one from the 2nd's, and our physio was named as a sub. On the flipside, st Austell had at least 6 subs.

Timmy perhaps there's a pattern forming there, unless of course you seem to be missing players regularly for all games? Found it interesting that your new signing Lee Bevan, who was cup tied, appeared to be managing the team on the day in the absence of Martin. Surely not ideal either.

Thought Saltash played some attractive stuff in spells but hardly penetrated whereas St Austell looked dangerous and penetrated the Ashes defence more. The wind was a big factor too, and the Ashes failed to use it to their advantage unlike St Austell.

Cusack mentioned in his post match radio interview that you were missing 19 players yesterday. If this is correct then you must have a squad of atleast 29 first team players at your disposal!?

I heard the interview too, and also thought the he said 19, but I think he said 9 'team' players. Our manager was on holiday, as you say ' not ideal'. Our assistant manager, AAron Cusack was playing, so he couldn't get a managers view of the proceedings. We have several players that won't be available every game, and a few more that can be called upon if desperate, but I guess yesterday was just one of those days. I take nothing away from the ashes management because they have achieved a lot on a tiny budget.

All the best to st Austell in the next round

By all accounts, Saltash did themselves proud yesterday, despite several key players missing from the squad.

The goalkeeping position seems to be bit of a problem at the moment, as Tom Blackler has not featured at all recently. Has he gone AWOL? Although, he has been not up to his usual standard this season.

Personally, I would like to see "the ashes" sign young Sam Borthwick from Callington Town. He is a Saltash lad through and through, good communication with his defence too.

From speaking to a few of the "regulars" at Saltash on the weekend, they confirmed what i had heard, the "Ashes" have or are going to put in 7 days for him. Could be a good signing all round, i also thought young Cory Harvey has done well for the games he has come in for, clean sheet against bovey on the weekend and didnt look out of place, looks like he will have a bright future in the game!

Whether there is any credibility in the alleged approaches to Sam Borthwick, only those concerned will know the truth.

Little did I know when I mentioned his name in a previous post, would a approach be made, if in fact it has. I merely thought he would be an excellent replacement for the AWOL Tom Blackler.

I guess from Borthwicks point of view, by remaining at Callington Town he is showing loyalty. You could say the demands of success at Saltash are greater than Callington and that has been his reasons for rejecting the move.

The goalkeeping situation this season has been bit of an issue this season, with Tom Blackler not having one of his best starts to a new campaign. Since an injury ruled him out of a few matches, he seems to have disappeared. Mike Roberts, being his usual self, helped out in a couple games and then we had another keeper on Saturday.

Having known Sam Borthwick for many years, I would welcome him to Kimberley Stadium. He always seems to communicate well with his defence, which is something the club have been missing.

If however, he wishes to stay at Callington, all the best to him.

By "natural progression" do you mean being with a club who has finished a top six side since the SWPL was formed.

Why not stay at a club that has climbed the pyramid system and is looking to be pretty much holding its own in their first season in the Premier and who knows perhaps take them higher and become the likes of a Saltash?

I think that, apart from the clubs who pay big money, players are happy to be in the same team as their mates. Who can blame them, it's only amateur football. I know players who play for the big spending teams, who turn out for their former teams reserve side.

I do think the keeper situation at saltash needs resolving, both Harvey and Roberts are great keepers, but we need a regular keeper who can play every game

No doubt Martin Burgess is working behind the scenes to provide a custodian for the gloves at Kimberley, but there is a budget to work within and the club adheres to this.

Whilst Callington Town have progressed well in recent years, are they realistically ever going to emulate the success of Saltash United Dave?

Basic point here is that there are two well run clubs, both with support from 2nd, 3rd teams ( and a fourth at Saltash I think), and good links with youth football.

Saltash obviously have better facilities, developed over many years ( I remember the Council building the stand), with a good history of success, Callington are a much younger club.

Sam has decided to remain with a close knit squad at Callington (great news), where there has been success over the last couple of years.

I'm sure Saltash will get their keeper situation sorted, as they are an attractive club for any player, with a well respected manager - good luck to The Ashes for the rest of the season, they were certainly impressive at Callington earlier in the season !

Nuff said on this subject I think

Probably not, but I'll tell you for sure in about five years time! :)
