Wendron 5 Downderry 1

In a repeat of last year's supp cup final it was wendron who again came out on top, unfortunately for downderry only having a bare 11 cost them dear as a heavy pitch and a wendron side with a rare luxury of substitutes were able to finish the stronger and punish tiredness, However it shows that downderry play in the league as they have an understanding that comes from playing together regularly and caused us problems although they seemed afraid to actually take a shot, choosing instead to play good football in areas that weren't really hurting us. With Dom pulled out with a bad back we pushed papa Harris on and Steve warr came straight in to midfield, papa played the killer ball to set stoves up for his 1st before Malcolm motel crossed for stoves again to finish neatly at the far post.

Second half and sub Paul hills was quickly in to the action scoring an own goal from a hopeful cross from the left, Downderry enjoyed their best spell of pressure and the next goal would be crucial, luckily for us Steve Brown pounced on a defensive misunderstanding to lob the keeper from 25 yards, you could see Downwardly tire and 2 more quick goals made by Steve brown and scored by Andy stivey enabled us to see the game out relatively comfortably, thanks to Downderry for travelling down with a bare minimum, always an enjoyable game in the true style of vets football we wish them all the best, well referee'd by Nigel Nicholls

Can c st Dennis winning 6-0 with my self getting all 6,cheers

St Dennis 2 illogan 2

A much improved illogan side that were unlucky 2 lose on pens, crap way 2 go out of a cup but that's how it is sometimes all the best 4 the remainder of the season

No 6-0 win then Grosie, and unless you scored all the penalties I'm assuming you didn't score all six against Illogan who I'm told are now called 'The Cruisers' Holmans. Who got your goals today?

Thanks for the hospitality guys, always enjoyable and thanks for running the line for us as well. Travelling all that way, getting lost, having no strikers and no goal keeper or subs, playing with the bare 11, it would have been easy to forfeit the game but Im glad we didnt.

Played in the true spirit of the game.

MQx (stand in keeper)

Veterans League Knockout Cup

Penzance Newlyn 4-2 Halsetown

Att – 8

Penzance Newlyn carried on their tradition of conceding two goals in every game they have played in their first season of football.

Originally this fixture was due to be played at Penlee Park but was reversed and played at Halsetown's ground, at St Ives Rugby Club. In the half-hour between having been postponed and reversed some of the Penzance squad had found alternative things to do and could not make the starting line-up. It is very difficult to break a promise to a wife if you have said you will go shopping with her on a Sunday morning!

The referee didn't turn up either so it was agreed by the sides that Penzance would officiate the first half and Halsetown the other.

Halsetown kick off under leaden skies, which eventually clear, and press forward putting the Penzance defence under strain for the first five minutes. Eventually the game turns and it is the other goalmouth that sees a bit of action and Halsetown concede a goal in the 13th minute. Penzance break on their right squaring the ball to Phil Shapcott who runs in avoiding a couple of tackles, volleying the ball in, cross goal, from the top corner of the box.

Halsetown almost equalise a few moments later when they are awarded a free kick, wide left. The ball is knocked over towards the back of the box to be knocked back in and a “Roy of the Rovers” type mid-air turn and volley almost knocks some paint off the near upright.

Halsetown, strong in the air use this advantage in the 25th minute to go level. A ball is lobbed in from the left for Kevin Toms to nod the ball in at the back post.

The rest of the half is an enjoyable end to end game with near misses for both sides but no goals are added to the tallies.

The second half kicks off and Halsetown are caught in possession in the first minute losing the ball in their own penalty area. Penzance's Steve Semmens takes a wild swing at the ball and it hits a defender before looping over the keeper into the net. Technically an own goal but we will give it to him as it is his first goal for the club.

Halsetown force a great diving save from the stand-in Magpies keeper with a strong volley after breaking left.

On 55 minutes it is all square again when a great floated ball from left to right into the area sees Toms once again leap like a salmon to head in his second.

Halsetown now press for the winner forcing Penzance to play deeper and deeper but they defend well and their keeper makes another couple of his diving saves.

As we start to wonder if there is overtime or straight into penalties if the score remains even at full-time, Penzance break the deadlock in the 76th minute. They win a corner on their right which is knocked over, out, in, out to Shapcott who fires in low under a crowd of players from roughly 10yds out making him the sides top scorer with three goals to his name so far this season.

A few minutes later Shapcott is denied his hat-trick by a good save following a great maisy run from midfield where he seemed to avoid a tackle from most of the opposition players.

From somewhere the ref finds 4mins of injury time and Penzance score in the second of them to make it 4-2. A long ball to the edge of the box is squared for Semmens to get his second with a low shot that beats the diving keeper.

Another good game of football played in the right spirit, with thanks to Halsetown for allowing the game to go ahead on their pitch.
