Grampound 2-3 Penzance Newlyn

Att – 8

Three late goals turned the score around and surprised most people on and off the pitch.

To make the score sweeter, Penzance played the whole game with only ten players but matched their opponents on the field apart from the last half hour of the first half.

This win takes them up to second in the table and they remain unbeaten in league games.

Grampound's pitch was in perfect condition and a credit to the ground-staff.

With a player short Penzance needed to slow the pace of the game down but it starts at a frenetic pace, end to end but no real threat to either goal.

One thing I have never seen before, the ball goes out of play and the Grampound manager rushes to get a long pole with a net on it to fish the ball out of a small stream that flows in the bushes alongside the pitch!

Penzance's Joe Osborne has a great chance to put them ahead when he gets the ball in the middle and is then tackled by and beats the whole of the Grampound back 8 before the keeper leaps onto the ball. Great maisy run around the box.

The home keeper is then booked for a challenge on the edge of the box when a goal looked odds on.

Penzance head a ball off their goal-line following a corner as the game, from about 15mins in, gradually sees Grampound push up the pitch and for the rest of the first period the game is mostly played in the Magpies half.

Time and again the Penzance back four are put under pressure but hold firm forcing Grampound to shoot from range. Luckily for Penzance most of it is woeful and a dozen shots must have gone well wide or over the bar before the hosts try a long high ball from the back in the 30th minute, which beats the defence allowing Glyn Ford to whip round visiting keeper Peter Bainbridge and walk the ball into the net to make it 1-0.

Grampound press to increase their lead but again their finishing lets them down.

H-T

The second half starts much the same as the end of the first with Penzance on the back foot. A corner from the Grampound right is knocked over to the back of the box for a toe poke that is cleared off the line, a shot from the edge of the box flies along the ground but just wide of the post, before Penzance start to come more into the game.

The Grampound keeper has to be on his toes to leap and finger-tip away a low shot heading for the net, whilst at the other end Bainbridge makes a save worthy of Gordon Banks. A cross goal shot is heading in when he dives and somehow flicks the ball up and over the bar from ground level.

Penzance get the ball in the net but it is disallowed for a foul on the keeper. The ref had a tendency to blow his whistle every time he heard a shout of pain and did so when the keeper went down. In the ensuing melee of players, Penzance's Lea Norman is booked for arguing.

With 76mins on the clock the lead is doubled when Grampound break right forcing Bainbridge to come out, a lay-off to Ford leaves him a simple shot from 12yds into an empty net.

Maybe Grampound thought they had won it but this second goal seems to spur Penzance on. Three minutes later they get their first following a corner on the right. The ball is knocked over, flick-headed to the back post for Mooney to get his one-goal-a-season from a low shot.

Penzance now push forward and the scores are level on 84mins. A break on the right is followed by a long cross pitch ball for Osborne to head back cross goal.

The Grampound back line seem to be at sixes and sevens and 3mins later Penzance break left, knock the ball over to the back post for Ben Carroll to volley in cross goal.

Conclusion, Penzance stuck to the task and never stopped going for it but to be truthful, Grampound should have been a country mile ahead if it wasn't for their final shot towards goal.
